TASMANIA caters for a wide range of special interests. In this section are special links to the ANIMALS, NATURAL WONDERS and HERITAGE attractions. These special index pages will tell you where to go to see these things.
FESTIVALS are held in many towns and these are colorful and unique events. Click the blue sections below to tell you what festivals are on that month.
HOBART: SYDNEY to HOBART YACHT RACE
is held from 26 December 2012 to 2 January 2013 at the Hobart Waterfront. Celebrate with the yachts, as they finish. Concurrent at the Waterfront pavilions is the TASTE of TASMANIA FESTIVAL, where you can taste numerous exotic foods and wines, while you are entertained. HOBART: TASTE of TASMANIA
is held in the first week of January on the Hobart Waterfront. Taste the delicious foods and wines of Tasmania in the pavilions along the Hobart Waterfront.
HOBART: BREAKFAST on the BOARDWALK
is held on Australian Day, 26 January 2012. Party at the food and wind stalls on the Bellerive Waterfront. Bellerive is the suburb across the Tasman Bridge on the eastern shore of Hobart.
CYGNET FOLK FESTIVAL
is held in mid January at Cygnet, which is south of Hobart. It features bands, dances, stalls and workshops in a number of venues around Cygnet.
LATROBE: HENLEY on MERSEY
festival celebrates the pioneers. It features wood chopping, sheaf tossing, whip cracking, archery, amateur boat races, triathlon, food and wine stores and the famous ferret races. It is held at the River Park at Latrobe on 26 January 2013. Latrobe is 5 minutes south of DEVONPORT. The telephone is (03) 6426 1442
LAUNCESTON: TAMAR BEER FESTIVAL
is held in mid January at City Park in Launceston City. Taste a wide variety of local and foreign beers, sample exotic foods and listen to the bands. The contact is www.tamarvalleybeerfestival.com.au
MARION BAY: FALLS FESTIVAL
is a three day event held from 29 December 2012 to 1 January 2013 at a large open area with beach access off Marwiel Road, Marion Bay. This is on the east coast some distance north of Dunalley on the road to Port Arthur. Just follow the signs off this road. The bands play modern music for young people, who camp out. It is a major, youth, music festival. Tents can be hired and food is sold. The contact is www.fallsfestival.com.au
HOBART: WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL
is a gathering of wooden boats, a fair, entertainment and a famous parade of sailing boats. It is held at the Hobart Waterfront in February. The telephone number is (03) 6223 3375 (See my photos in HOBART.)
HOBART: ROYAL HOBART REGATTA
is a major festival staged along the River Derwent in Hobart City. It includes a fun fair, yacht races and fireworks. It is held in mid February.
HOBART: HOBART CUP
is the major horse racing event in Tasmania. It is held in mid February, at the Elwick Race Course, which is just east of the Brooker Highway in Glenorchy. Glenorchy is a suburb just north of Hobart City.
HOBART: FESTA ITALIA
is a street festival with an Italian theme. It includes food, costumes, dancing, entertainment and fun events. It is held in Federal Street, North Hobart on February. From the Hobart CBD just travel north up either Argyle or Elizabeth streets.
RICHMOND: St ANDREWS HIGHLAND GAMES
is a fun fair of Scottish music and games. It is held in mid February in the small town of Richmond, which is just north east of Hobart.
LAUNCESTON: FESTIVALE
is a festival of food, where you can taste the best that Tasmania has to offer. It is held in early February in City Park, which is just east of Launceston City. The telephone is (03) 6334 9990
LAUNCESTON: SYMPHONY under the STARS
is an open air performance by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. It is held in late February in City Park, which is just east of Launceston City. The telephone is (03) 6323 3000
EVANDALE: PENNY FARTHING FAIR
is a fun fair with shops, bands, displays of historic equipment, plus the famous penny farthing bike races around the town. It is held in mid February at Evandale, which is just south of LAUNCESTON. (See my photos in EVANDALE.)
TASMANIA WIDE: TARGA TASMANIA
is a multi day car race across various towns in Tasmania. It is held in mid April. Contact www.targa.org.au
BEAUTY POINT: THREE PEAKS YACHT RACE
begins with a fair at Beauty Point Pier, which is also home to Sea Horse World and Platypus House. The race visits three peaks and ends in Hobart. It is held in around Easter. BEAUTY POINT is 40 minutes north of LAUNCESTON and just 5 minutes east of BEACONSFIELD.
CARRICK: AGFEST
is a massive display of everything relevant to agriculture. It the largest show of its type in Australia. It is held in early April in a very large outdoor venue south of Carrick. Just follow the signs as you approach Carrick, which is 20 minutes West of LAUNCESTON.
DEVONPORT: APEX REGATTA
is a fun fair on the Mersey River Foreshore of Devonport. It includes a sideshow alley, fun activities, water ski, jet ski, boating events, plus swimming races. It is held in early March. The telephone number is (03) 6424 4466
EVANDALE: GLOVER PRIZE
is a major showing of art works. It is held at Falls Park, Evandale in mid March. Evandale is south east of LAUNCESTON.
HAMILTON: AGRICULTURAL SHOW
is a classic country style show featuring rodeo competitions, horse show jumping, wood chopping and other fun fair activities. It is held in late March in Hamilton. This is an hour north west of HOBART.
LAUNCESTON: HENLEY REGATTA
features boat races and a fun fair. It is held at King's Park on the Launceston Waterfront in March. The telephone is 0409 139 526
LAUNCESTON: BREATH of LIFE FESTIVAL
is a major music festival held at Inveresk Park in mid March. Inveresk is the suburb North East of Launceston City. The Internet contact is www.breathoflifefestival.com
RICHMOND: COLONIAL FAIR
is a fun fair that celebrates the town's history. It is held in late March in the Town Centre. Richmond is just North of HOBART.
SHEFFIELD: STEAM FEST
is a historic fair, where a huge variety of old steam engines and other historic, agricultural machines are shown. If you are a steam enthusiast, then this is a must see event. SHEFFIELD: MURAL FESTIVAL
is a fair which hosts a unique competition to create exotic murals. Sheffield is famous for the 40 plus murals that decorate the town. If you like art then this is a must see. It starts in March in Sheffield and continues for a few days. Sheffield is south west of Devonport.(See my photos in SHEFFIELD)
WESTBURY: St PATRICK'S FESTIVAL
includes a colorful march down the main street, plus a fair and a music festival which celebrates being Irish. The festival is held in the Village Green area of Westbury around St Patricks Day in mid March. Westbury is south west of LAUNCESTON. (See my photos in WESTBURY.) The contact is www.wspf.info
HOBART: MIDWINTER FESTIVAL
is a night parade, bonfire and other events celebrating midwinter and Hobart's connection to the Australian Antarctic bases. It is held in the Waterfront area of Hobart in mid June.
WESTBURY: MAYPOLE FESTIVAL
is a celebration of May with dancing and a fair. It is held in the Village Green area of Westbury in the first week of May. Westbury is south west of LAUNCESTON.
DEVONPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL
is a festival of music with both Tasmanian and Australian artists performing. It is staged in a number of venues around Devonport. It is held in very late July. The telephone is (03) 6424 4466
LATROBE: CHOCOLATE WINTERFEST
is a fair to celebration all things made of Chocolate. It is held in a number of venues around Latrobe in the mid July. Latrobe is just south of DEVONPORT.
BURNIE & WYNYARD: MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL
is a festival with a medieval theme. It hosts costumes, food, sword fighting and jousting. It is held at various venues in Wynyard and Burnie in September.
LAUNCESTON: TASTE of the TAMAR
is a celebration of the foods and the wines of the Tamar Valley. It is held in mid September and begins at the giant Grand Chancellor Hotel in Launceston City. It then visits vineyards in the Tamar Valley. The contact is www.tasteofthetamar.com.au
BICHENO FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL
is a great way to taste the cheese, wine and the famous sea food. There is even some entertainment for children. The festival is held in the small town of Bicheno in November. Bicheno is on the central east coast of Tasmania. The telephone is 0407 512 582
BRIGHTON SHOW
is a traditional show featuring bands, food, sideshows, show bags, wood chopping, entertainment, animals, rides and even a baby contest. It is held in November at the Brighton Racecourse, which is just north of the Midland Highway in Brighton. Brighton is on the extreme northern edge of HOBART. The telephone is (03) 6286 1122
BURNIE SHOW
is a traditional show featuring animal events, rides, entertainment, arts and crafts and food stores. It is held early October at the Wivenhoe Showgrounds. These are on the eastern edge of Burnie just south of the Tasman Highway. The telephone is (03) 6434 6111
DELORAINE CRAFT FAIR
is one of the largest displays of arts and crafts in Australia. It is held in early November at a number of venues around Deloraine. A free bus services makes commuting between venues easy. The telephone number is 0410 557 598
DEVONPORT AGRICULTURAL SHOW
is a fair that features animal displays, horse jumping events, trade displays, live entertainment and fun activities. It is held in late November at the Devonport Showgrounds. These are just north of the Devonport CBD. The telephone is (03) 6424 4466
SYMMONS PLAINS: V8 SUPER CARS

FLINDERS ISLAND SHOW
is a celebration of the famous produce of Flinders Island. It features rides, animal events and entertainments. It is held in mid October at the showgrounds in Whitemark, Flinders Island. The telephone is (03) 6359 2177
HOBART: ROYAL HOBART SHOW
is a traditional show featuring show bags, animal events, rides, stores and fun activities. It is held at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds in Glenorchy in late October. Glenorchy is just north of Hobart City. The Showgrounds are just west of the Brooker Highway in Glenorchy.
HOBART: BELLERIVE SEAFARERS' FESTIVAL
is a fair with a seafarer theme on the Bellerive Broadwalk. Bellerive is the suburb on the eastern shore of Hobart, which is just across the famous Tasman Bridge. It is held on 21 October 2012.
LAUNCESTON SHOW
is a traditional show featuring show bags, animal events, rides, stores and fun activities. It is held in mid October at the Inveresk Railyards. Inveresk is a suburb north east of Launceston City.
WYNYARD: TULIP FESTIVAL
is a fair celebrating tulips. It is held in mid October at various locations in Wynyard and at nearby Table Cape. Wynyard is west of BURNIE. The telephone is (03) 6443 8331
MARKETS:
Several Tasmanian towns host regular markets, where you can source food, wine, plants, antiques, clothing and bric-a-brac. The markets are held on either Saturdays or Sundays. Some markets are once a week, while other are only once a month, so note the times. The same towns often host other antique stores, which make Tasmania a great place to shop for old things.
DELORAINE
hosts a food, plants and bric-a-brac market in the showgrounds every first Saturday of the month. The Showgrounds are on the southern edge of the town. The telephone number is (03) 6362 5280. Deloraine is south west of LAUNCESTON.
DERBY
hosts a food, crafts and bric-a-brac market in the Town Hall every third Sunday of the month. The Town Hall is in the main street. Derby is in the north east corner of Tasmania.
EVANDALE
host a large market every Sunday in Falls Park, which is on the main street of Evandale. It sells plants, food, crafts, bric-a-brac and artworks. It even has pony rides and other amusements for the children. There is a train ride in a nearby park. The telephone is (03) 6391 9191 Evandale is south of Launceston.
LAUNCESTON ESK
market is quite large and sells food, plants, crafts and bric-a-brac. It is held every Sunday in the Inveresk Rail Yards. Inveresk is just north of the Launceston CBD. The telephone is (03) 6331 6044
HOBART SALAMANCA
market is the largest in Tasmania. It sells almost everything and has great street entertainment. It is held every Saturday in Salamanca Square. This is the western continuation of the Hobart Waterfront. Salamanca is also host to many restaurants and boutique stores, so it is a must see. The telephone is (03) 6238 2843.
SHEFFIELD
market is held every third Saturday of the month in the Town Hall in the main street. It sells food, crafts and bric-a-brac. The telephone is (03) 6491 2404. Sheffield is south of DEVONPORT.
WESTBURY
has a market every third Saturday of the month in the Anglican Church grounds opposite the Village Green. It sells food, plants and bric-a-brac. The telephone is (03) 6393 1417 The town of Westbury is south west of LAUNCESTON.
