ARTHUR RIVER
Bluff Hill, Marrawah & Cape Grim
SMALL PHOTO & INFORMATION PAGE
ARTHUR RIVER and MARRAWAH are small settlements on the pristine coast of the Southern Ocean in north western Tasmania. The winds and waves here are really rugged. To the south is the wilderness of the Tarkine Forest, so the feeling is one of being at the end of the World. This area has the cleanest air in the World for when you look to the west, you discover that the next land is South America, a massive 15,000 kilometres away. This area is popular with fishermen and people who want to walk in pristine places. There is a river cruise of the Arthur River from the Arthur River settlement, plus accommodation at both settlements.
Note that this area is isolated and subjected to extreme weather. Marrawah is 40 minutes from Smithton, the nearest large town, and the Arthur River settlement is further still. Facilities are limited to a shop at Arthur River and a hotel at Marrawah.
CAPE GRIM is north of Marrawah and the site of a large wind farm. Woolnorth is a huge dairy farm. There are no facilities at either.
This area connects with CORINNA and the west coast towns of ZEEHAN, STRAHAN and QUEENSTOWN, but it is a long 150 kilometres down the very difficult C249 Western Explorer Road. This is a 4WD gravel track.
From Arthur River hamlet you are 30 minutes from SMITHTON, the TARKINE DRIVE and CAPE GRIMM. You are within one hour of STANLEY and ROCKY CAPE. Nearby places are described in the NORTH WEST-TARKING REGION page.

FACILITIES: There is only a hotel and a petrol pump at Marrawah and there is only a shop at Arthur River settlement. The nearest large shopping precinct is at Smithton. There is some accommodation at both Marrawah and ARTHUR RIVER.
