NORTH EAST:
BEACHES, FORESTS & MOUNTAINS
NORTH EAST map above shows that the North East of Tasmania really three different regions.
There is firstly the coastal belt of WEYMOUTH, BRIDPORT, WATERHOUSE, GLADSTONE, MUSSELROE BAY and ANSONS BAY.
There is then a forest belt of LILYDALE FALLS, SCOTTSDALE, DERBY, POIMENA, St COLUMBA FALLS and St HELENS. There are two good roads connecting this area to the northern coastal belt.
Finally, there is the mountain belt of BEN LOMOND and BEN NEVIS, which is connected by roads to LAUNCESTON and not the rest of the north east.
In terms of driving times: BRIDPORT, SCOTTSDALE, DERBY are within one hour of each other, so this area can be regarded as a central area to tour from.
ANSONS BAY and MUSSELROE BAY are isolated. They are one hour from the small town of GLADSTONE.
WATERHOUSE and WEYMOUTH are close to BRIDPORT.
Mt BEN LOMOND and Mt BEN NEVIS are quite separate from these other areas and are accessed from LAUNCESTON.
LAUNCESTON is 60 minutes from BRIDPORT and SCOTTSDALE. It is a good place to visit many attractions in the western north east.

SIGHTS: Mt BEN LOMOND and Mt BEN NEVIS are awesome sights, while the white sand beaches of WEYMOUTH, BRIDPORT, WATERHOUSE, MUSSELROE BAY, ANSONS BAY and St HELENS are really beautiful. There are some interesting forests walks around SCOTTSDALE, DERBY, POIMENA and the St COLUMBA FALLS. There is the famous Lavender Farm near Scottsdale.
ROUTES: Except on the B82, which runs parallel to the northern coast, all driving in the north is on winding mountain roads. There is no geographic unity in this area, unlike on the EAST COAST. In addition MUSSELROE and ANSONS bays are accessed on gravel roads from GLADSTONE, so beware! However, the A3 Tasman Highway from St HELENS to LAUNCESTON is a good road.
